Tub-to-shower conversions

Take out the tub and put in a shower that is easier to step into.

A tub asks a person to lift a leg over a wall and balance on a wet floor. A low-step shower trades that for a few inches and a place to hold. It is the change many families choose first, because it works in the space the tub had and needs less floor work than a curbless shower.

What is included

  • The tub, surround and fixtures removed and hauled away

  • A shower base with a low edge, or a curbless one if the floor allows

  • Wall blocking set for bars, a seat or a bench

  • A handheld shower and a valve you can reach from outside

Before you decide

What changes the cost, and what is not included

  • The size of the tub opening

A standard tub space fits a standard shower base. An odd size may mean a custom base or a small wall change.

    • Standard sizes keep the cost and the time down

  • The walls

New wall material goes in with solid blocking. If the old walls are damaged we repair them before anything goes in.

    • Damage found behind the surround is a change order

  • The shower itself

A base with a bench, a door or a curtain, and the controls you choose. Bars and seats are a separate line.

    • Glass doors add a cost and need cleaning

  • What the estimate leaves out

Permit fees, a new vanity or floor, and repairs to anything the old tub was hiding.

    • Matching tile beyond the shower is a separate scope

How it goes

The steps, in order

  1. 01

    Step 1: Walk-through

We measure the tub, check the drain and ask how your parent bathes. We look for the other places a fall is likely.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Plan and order

A drawing, a list of what is in and out of the scope, and an order date for the base and fixtures.

  3. 03

Step 3: Out with the tub

The tub and surround come out and the floor and walls are inspected.

  4. 04

Step 4: In with the shower

Blocking, base, walls, valve and fixtures. We test for leaks before we close it up.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Final walk-through

We run the water and set the bars with your parent, so they fit the person using them.

Questions

Good to know

How long will it take?

A bathroom is weeks, not days, and the estimate gives you a timeline for your house. A rail or a ramp is often a matter of days. We tell you what the permit queue adds, since we do not control it.

Can my parent stay in the house during the work?

Usually, with a plan. Before we book, we agree on when the water is off, where your parent will wash and what to do about the toilet. If the only bathroom is being rebuilt, we talk about a portable option or a short stay elsewhere, and we say so up front.

What if you find something behind the wall?

We stop, show you photos and write a change order with its price before we go on. Nothing is billed that you have not seen and agreed to in writing.

Comparing a tub change with a bigger one?

We will lay out the options for your bathroom side by side, with what each includes and what it leaves out.
